As someone's pointed out, the actual author of the book whose review started this has posted *nothing* in public about this as far as anyone can tell, which is of course the professional thing to do.

I do think one or two of the reader blogs are unnecessarily cruel, and sometimes cross the line into spite. But there will always be people who don't like your work, and writers need to learn to deal with that. There are spiteful reviews, yes, but there are also authors and publishers who throw hissy fits because a reviewer suggested in a perfectly polite and mostly positive review that the book was not perfect in every way. If a reviewer really is malicious and posting negative views just for the fun of trashing writers, then people will quickly realise that and discount her reviews.
