I recently re-read this and one of the things I particularly enjoyed was Vicky's self-conscious costuming for and trying out of different roles. I thought Heyer was very deliberately playing with stock characters there for the reader's enjoyment.

The blurb on mine completely gave the mystery away though, in the sense of once you know how, you know who, to paraphrase Sayers.
