more MySpace idiocy

Two friend requests on MySpace today. Note -- these are random strangers who have requested to friend me. I go to look at the profile, to see if it's simply spam, and in both cases I find the profile is private, and that I am not allowed to see the profile until the person has friended me.

So, even though *they* initiated the friend request, MySpace will not let me see who they are until *after* I friend them back. I haven't a clue who these people are, and no way to tell if they might be genuinely interested in me, playing stupid "I've got more friends than you" games with their social group, or out and out spammers.

I could always friend them briefly and then unfriend them again, but really, it's easier just to ignore them. Not their fault, but MySpace's. Bad coding, guys.

Facebook's the same. It does let you know who your mutual friends are, and I can sometimes guess why from that. If there are no mutuals I write on the person's wall and ask why the request. Last time it was some kid who was studying me for GCSE!

I've got a request on another system that I'm ignoring for similar reasons. I think I may know the person, but it's a common name and last time I checked, he hadn't friended people whom I would have assumed to be mutual friends.
