julesjones: Jack Harkness and a mug of coffee, Torchwood (coffee and Jack)

Not exactly the usual RTD "brilliant and then goes all to pieces in the last half hour", but even so, there was far too much piling on the manpain just for the sake of manpain. I have said more than once that Torchwood is essentially a bunch of Who fanboys and girls writing fanfic and conning the BBC into paying to put it on screen. Sometimes this is a good thing, and sometimes it is not. What they did with the five night mini-series format was absolutely bloody brilliant as a whole, but That Scene last night felt suspiciously like someone had a lovely idea for A Really Clever Thing To Do, and then failed to do the necessary work to make it feel like an organic part of the story it was grafted into. I've got a migraine, so I'm going to have to leave it until tomorrow to rant in detail about "we didn't kill him off in Cyberwoman like we were going to, so let's do it now, complete with replay of Magic Kiss Of Life only *this* time it doesn't work!".

Well, they were going to kill him off in S2, but RTD changed his mind at the last minute and switched it to Owen instead.

There were things I would have done differently - but altogether a brilliant outing for Torchwood in Season Three. Now if only we knew if they were planning a Season Four... With ratings almost doubled, I should hope so.

Agreed. But I can't see how there could be a season 4 without Captain Jack. Even with his special knowledge, Torchwood seemed out of their depth for most of the time, and without him they'd have no chance. But if Jack has a change of heart, perhaps he'll sign up Johnson, Lois and the guy in the khaki labcoat.

Haven't seen tonight's episode yet (Choir practice overran as usual) but I think what upsets me most about Ianto's death yesterday is that it was so bloody pointless. He might just as well have been a Star Trek Red shirt. Ok, Cap'n 'I'm wonderful! I can't die! See me angst!' Jack was upset for a nanosecond, but Ianto deserved better.

Is it me, or is Cap'n Jack becoming more and more Mary-Sueish (sic) with every episode? / snark

I haven't seen it, but it's all OVER my flist... 90% hate it, a few love it.

I'm surprised, as - at least for the first 3 episodes - the reactions I've seen on my own flist have been very positive. Even posters to uk.media.tv.sf.drwho, who mostly hate RTD, have raved about it.
