Personally I like to have everything backed up to my own computer and then backed up to removable memory sticks or mobile harddrives.
For LJ, during the last DoS attack, I was delighted to discover LJ-Archive. Not only does it archive all your LJ posts and comments, but you can refer to it offline and it's searchable. For example, if I want to find an old post, I can search LJ-archive, find the date and then use LJ's calendar to find it online if I need to link to it.
