IIRC, Pat Elrod actually talks about this in the Vampire Chronicles. Jack has to remember to breathe when he's being examined closely enough for someone to notice if he doesn't, and there are a couple of times when he doesn't wake up fast enough after being knocked out to do this, and winds up being treated as a corpse.
