low frequency hum redux

julesjonesOther Half tells me that no, I am not imagining the low frequency hum because he has heard it too, and that there is an explanation for it; namely that someone in this building is failing to switch their amplifier off when their stereo isn't playing anything, and it's generating a 50Hz hum when it's got nothing better to do with its amplification circuit.
I'm still not entirely convinced that this is the whole answer, given the annoying tendency to irregular throbbing in the noise I've been hearing, but at least this suggests that it's not an issue with my hearing. The fact that I've heard it a couple of times in other locations is probably down to having been sensitised to low frequency sound so that I'm more likely to notice it now.
