I received today a threatening letter from BT, saying that my payment is now overdue and threatening me with late payment and/or re-connection charges if I do not pay it within the next couple of days. And making heavy hints about why don't I switch to direct debit and let them have direct access to my bank account so that this need never happen again.

The date on this threat letter is 27th July.

The due date of the bill is 28th July (and the bill in question was paid on the 25th by direct transfer through BillPay).

So they are sending out "overdue payment" threats a) before the bill is actually overdue, and b) after the bill has already been paid, and enough time after said payment that they should know that the bill has already been paid, given that it's all fully automated. I am somewhat curious as to whether this is actually legal, and if there is a lawsuit in progress on the subject.
