I joined LibraryThing some years ago, because they did exactly what I wanted (as in, serious bibliophile catalogue with nit-picking edition data rather than just titles), and because they were almost the first. They *also* are spam-hostile, to the point where it's not all that easy to send an invite to a friend even manually.
Goodreads has never been as anti-social as Shelfari, and I really thought they'd mended their ways on the spamming.
