Finished Jane Eyre on the way home tonight, and am reminded why that book has had such a hold over readers for the last 160 years. Angst and melodrama in spades, and when it's done this well...

I only read it for the first time a few years ago, but enjoyed it greatly. I never like the classics when I was young because they were kind of forced on us and held up to be so wonderful. As a result, I rebelled and refused to read them.

It's only recently that I realised what I'd missed. (Though I still don't like Dickens!)
