sex and taxes

Well, it's better than death and taxes, isn't it? Anyway, started on the taxes this morning. Was interrupted by arrival of February's royalty statement plus W9 form to fill in and send back. Lord and Master sold 396 copies in its first week. Now, I know some of my friends sell far more than this number just in the pre-orders on Amazon, but that's pretty good by ebook standards, and the best first month I've had to date. I suspect I can thank Teach Me Tonight for a few of those, but it's also a reflection of growing sales numbers in general at my publisher. Two more reviews for the book:

I'm still blocked on the third Buildup book, and at this point I'm giving in; tomorrow I'm switching to the other project I had in mind for this year, the not-a-werewolf story that is the result of a childhood spent reading Andre Norton. I'm not entirely sure yet how that one ends, but at least I know how it starts, and the Buildup book is the other way around. :-(

I've actually been doing some reading this week. I read the third volume of Shout Out Loud, the yaoi manga series I've been reviewing. Then I started on desperance's Outremer trilogy, in spite of esmeraldus_neo's attempts to distract me by waving Austen scholarship under my nose. I haven't got far enough into the first book to comment on the plot yet, but dear god you could get drunk just reading the prose. Amazing use of language, and how did I manage to miss this when it first came out?

Note back from editor saying she hasn't had time to look all the way through Black Leather Rose but likes what she's read so far, and that I can expect the edits on Dolphin Dreams in a few days. So there'll be something to do even if I'm blocked on the other story as well.

A W-9... this late? I would be fearing for my job if I'd sent out a W-9 this late in the year. They should have been sent out the first week of January so they could get your 1099 by the end of January. Heck, they're about to be late on getting a copy of the IRS if they can't get them out by Wednesday.

The 1099s went out in January. *Then* the accountant decided that W9s from everyone would be a good idea. No, I have no idea what brought this on. They've already got everyone's SS/TIN or statement of lack of same owing to Not Being American, so maybe there was just mad panic about making sure they're covered on the withholding.

Hm. Interesting cultural differences -- and perhaps I didn't do enough to emphasise that Mark's job is as much research assistant, in the manner of some academic post-doc jobs, as office manager.

At the moment it's scheduled for early April, but that's not set in stone. It was originally due out by now, but then I went and wrote a Valentine-themed book, and they got swapped round in the editing queue because it would have been pushing things to get them both properly edited before Valentine's Day.

This sort of thing is why the Management wince if we tell people the scheduled date. :-)

I finished Spindrift (and Pulling Strings) this morning before going to bed (5:30) and will pick up the sequel tonight. Downloads are great ;)


The good news about me liking an author is that I usually purchase all their books. The bad news is that I'm always wanting more.

I don't have anything more with the Lord and Master characters specifically planned, but I wouldn't rule out doing more.

[grin] I try not to do the reading all night thing these days -- I feel so awful the next morning. And yes, ebooks do have the advantage of instant gratification.
