I loved it, but I am mean and heartless and a Blake's 7 fan. As I said, wimps. They didn't kill *all* of them, they didn't even kill off Owen properly mid-season, what's everyone complaining about?
I admit that I think B7's end was the best series end ever, though I'm not certain that this is the end of the road for Torchwood, so perhaps they had to leave someone :) But I thought it was cool that they let these rumours get about about Owen dying, and then brought him back so that everyone could go 'oh, that's alright then', and *then* did it properly. Hahaha - that's genius ;)
(Though I'd be more upset if they'd done it to Ianto. I admit that my reaction to Owen being sealed in the reactor was 'oh, thank god, they're finally going to get rid of him properly!')
They've been talking about season 3 of Torchwood for a while; RTD wants to make it and I imagine that with the ratings they pulled on series 2 there'll be no trouble getting the green light. But if they make it to a fourth season, the last episode could be... interesting.
I'd have been upset if they'd killed Ianto, and not just because I think Jack and Ianto are pretty together. But Owen has clearly been for the chop ever since he got zombified, it was just a matter of when and how; and much as I like Tosh as a character, she's clearly the most expendable member of the team in terms of character and plot dynamics.
Of course, there is the little matter of whether it is possible to kill Owen properly dead before the glove energy disperses, but I'll be annoyed if they try to bring him back as an energy creature without a *very* good excuse.
I was half-expecting him to stagger back into the hub at the end as a glow-in-the-dark skeleton. Did you see the bit on "declassified" where Burn Gorman said maybe he escaped into the sewers and became king of the Weevils? ;)
Yes - I like the Jack/Ianto a lot, but I also like Ianto a lot on his own; he's an interesting character, and not a little strange, even without Jack. And I agree about Tosh - they never knew what to do with her when they had her, so it makes sense to try again with a different character. Martha might be good, though possibly too sensible for Torchwood.
Billowy black cloud Owen might be interesting though. I quite enjoyed the different dynamic of having a zombie on the team :)
Of course, Ianto is the pretty just-a-teaboy who managed to hide his cyberised girlfriend in the basement for months without anybody else in Torchwood Cardiff noticing that there was something *odd* about him over and above what you might expect from a Torchwood Canary Wharf survivor. :-) I did like what they did with his segment of Fragments, with his utter determination to get into Torchwood 3 -- and if you haven't seen Cyberwoman, there's a whole chunk of subtext that will go whooshing overhead, because they did it the right way and left it all as subtext.
Having recently taken possession of the boxed set of series 1, I've watched 1.1 a couple of times in the last week, and he's quite the interesting character in that even with all of half a dozen lines -- and not just from viewing it in hindsight knowing about Lisa.
Martha is *much* too sensible for Torchwood, although I'm not entirely happy about her working for the new shiny "in the current political climate" UNIT... Though I suppose that could be an excuse for her to be moved over to Torchwood next season as the new medic, as has been rumoured.
Ianto is a very unusual character above and beyond the fact that he's the first 'hero's boyfriend' I know of. The Cyberwoman episode is definitely the first proof we have that there's a lot going on under the surface - and I like the fact that that carries on throughout. All the other characters are emotionally transparent and outgoing and Ianto is private, cut off and secretive; even when he no longer has to be. And he's such a physically undemonstrative character too - he doesn't touch people for comfort, only for sex or violence. That's very different from your typical TV character. In 'Out of the Rain' when he launched into his talk about how beautiful the old film was, I was thinking 'boy, you're seriously strange!' And I love that! I definitely must watch the first series again.
New UNIT is not something that I'm happy with at all. The lack of condemnation for their behaviour in text or subtext is not on. Whatever other countries do, our TV should not be putting forward the idea that this is acceptable behaviour for any government institution. Pre or post 9/11 should make no difference.
I thought that it was an excellent episode, though I was sad that they killed off Tosh, my favourite character. Still, she had a properly heroic and moving death.
As for Owen, since we didn't actually see his death (or whatever the right word is when he was already dead), I'm sure that if they want to bring him back they can find a way to do so.
I think Tosh was the most expendable from the scripting point of view, but I'm very glad they gave her a fittingly heroic death.
I'm still wondering what happens to a zombie powered by weird death energy if you erode his body. Back when he was first resurrected there was fannish discussion about what it would take to kill him properly, and whether destroying his body completely would actually be enough to do it. But as I said above, I will be annoyed if they bring him back without a very good excuse.
I'm a bit worried that they might try for another Owen resurrection and I seriously don't think they should... though he could be ghost energy for one story (or better still they think it's Owen the ghost, but it turns out to be just their imagination).
Martha would work for me if they wanted to bring her back, but they'd need to do something interesting with her. She had one strong episode and two weak ones. I guess we'll see where they leave her at the end of this season of Doctor Who.
I'm kinda sorry to lose Tosh, but she did die well and it leaves room for a completely new character and a new dynamic.
Am I the only one around here who things they should have kept the Jack/Ianto thing off screen and therefore much more enticing for its mystery?
