Charlie Stross points out that today is the 25th anniversary of the day that nuclear war *didn't* break out, thanks to one man who was willing to make a judgement call that a new missile detection system had got it wrong.

Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov, I thank you for those 25 years.

I never knew this. I now have the date marked on my birthday list, so I can raise a glass to the man every year that I still live thanks to him from now on.

I was vaguely aware that there had been such an incident, but I didn't know the details or the name of the man. Now I do, for which I am glad.
