The Man With The Parts has been and gone. Naturally, the wretched thing has been on its best behaviour since last night, but he replaced the relevant bits based on my description of what it had been up to, and gave it a service into the bargain. I'm hoping that this is the end of it, at least for a few months. With any luck I will now have a few hours of quality writing time this weekend, even after I catch up on the housework.

There was time when I took to videoing the washing machine in hope of persuading the repair man that it "did not work".

To add insult to injury I used to pass a bill board advertising the same model with the slogan "the washing machine that thinks for itself".
"Hah" I would mutter, "and what it thinks is 'not today'".

Yes, at least the guy was quite prepared to believe that it had been misbehaving -- from the sound of it he's had plenty of experience with intermittent faults that vanish when the repair man appears. His main concern (and mine) was simply that as it was working when he arrived, he couldn't be sure that what he'd done had fixed it.

Yay for a repairman with a clue, and one who is willing to accept that people don't just call out experts to a fully-working appliance because they feel like having company.

The one good thing about this week is that the two plumbers and the service engineer who have been to look at it (my landlady is a believer in multiple quotes, for reasons demonstrated by the three quotes she got) were all of the opinion that it was probably one of two common faults which are well known to mysteriously come and go for a while before the part finally packs in for good, and did not go in for any of that patting on the head nonsense.
