I've only just seen this and haven't had time to do any checking. Picked up from a comment in the "Amazon's Very Bad Day" Thread on Making Light:

It seemed like an unlikely explanation to me, anyway. And the bit about being unable to manually alter data in the system is utter tosh. The customer service people might be unable to do it, but the sysadmins are without a shadow of a doubt able to change every single piece of info in their database with just a few very simple instructions.
