julesjones: Jack Harkness and a mug of coffee, Torchwood (coffee and Jack)

One of the items in the WnotIP list is a Ianto story inspired by watching Fragments for about the third or fourth time in one week, along with some like-minded friends who were only too happy to watch it again so that one member of the party could catch up on Fragments and Exit Wounds.

Ep 4 wouldn't have hurt it a bit. But it just got thoroughly jossed by the word "Debenhams".

I may write it anyway. I can see ways to to work around the jossing...

ETA: Actually, I've just had an evil little inspiration for a post-series 3 coda...

I just choose the canon I feel should apply and if it might cause confusion or annoyance, state the exact parameters up-front before the story starts. For instance, I might say, "This Dragonball Z fic assumes everything up through the Cell Game happened pretty much as seen; it also uses parts of movies 2, 5, 6, and 7. Nothing from later sequences, which mostly suck, need apply."

I simply feel I know how to do the stories better than a lot of these guys do once they start getting tired, or (as appears to be the case with Torchwood) combine a feeling of being too clever for their own good with a corporate pressure for success. And since no one's paying me for the fanfic, I feel no obligation to keep anything I don't like in my fics. So if I wrote Star Wars fic, there would be no JarJar Binks, and 90% of the prequels would be gone. Our Saint Seiya fics extended the universe in a number of directions that Kurumada would never have gone... and IMCGO, our stuff ended up vastly better than the repetitive crap he ended up writing.

My thought on the Debenhams line was that that and the master tailor thing could both be true, with one sibling knowing more of the matter than the other.

Of course you may! Delighted that it's of use. Incidentally, I don't know if it's the case now, but I think some department stores used to do alterations of the clothes you bought from them - another way in which both may be true. My mother thinks her grandfather did that for Barkers of Kensington (later taken over by House of Fraser) as he was a tailor.

Yes, that could easily explain what went on. If Ianto is older than his sister, then she might only know of her Dad working at Debenhams, not his earlier career, especially if he'd shifted jobs within the company. Or it might be something that Ianto heard from either of his parents - down the pub with his Dad or if they didn't have that good a relationship, perhaps his mother told him to explain something about his Dad, such as bitterness at a failed career.
