diamond dust and hoar frost

In comments on DW, jhall1 correctly suggests that the tiny glittering ice crystals I saw on Monday were diamond dust. I made no attempt to photograph them, since I was dragging luggage with me and the camera would have required extensive unpacking. But I did get some nice shots of the frost the next day.

I'm sorry we didn't get to share the diamond dust, though I suspect it would have been difficult to photograph. But the trees are very pretty.

If I'd thought there was a realistic prospect of getting a good photo, I might have gone ahead and hauled stuff out looking for the camera. But the dust was so fine and fast moving that I doubted that my digital camera could have captured it.

If I'd had the film SLR with me and loaded with a fine-grained film, I would certainly have tried running a couple of shots at 1/1000 s.
