Oh yes... Some readers will be familiar with my whining about how I don't write many short stories because most of my short stories end up being 20-60 kwords long. So much so that my editor at Loose Id laughs at me when I say I've got an idea for a short story, and just says she'll expect to see it when I've finished it. Well, that 102 kwords in draft thing I just turned in started out as a desperate attempt to come up with a short story for sacchig's stint as guest editor at Suspect Thoughts last year, as mentioned in this post:

It had mutated quite a lot by the time it gelled and I actually started setting it down about three months later, and not just in the length -- but that's where it started.
