I'm not really bothered by the rasfc thread in question -- more slightly bemused that there's a minor episode of genre-bashing going on in a venue that is somewhat sensitive to genre-bashing when the genre is closer to home.

Everyone likes to genre bash at times. I mean even if you know that its not true that ALL the readers of Foo are like THAT we all just human and sometimes we don't want to see the big picture. And now that I'm done being reasonable I'll go write an essay about how close minded fans are because I like poking the alien pod with a stick to see if it will explode. <grin>

Maybe I'll open it by calling it sci-fi just to see if any heads will explode.

I think the sci-fi shibboleth is silly, but I know it annoys some people and I know *why* it annoys them, so I avoid the term. Ditto the p word when it comes to romance. (Though nobody had yet used that word last time I looked at the thread, even if it was heading in that direction.)

The thing james_nicoll has just linked to about The New Comprehensible has made me contemplate writing a post about my stuff being in small part intended to be a gateway drug, but I should probably stay away from that. It would a) open me to accusations of being a pretentious wanker, b) be cat-vacuuming.

The reaction of a lot of romance fans to the word "porn" is very similar to the reaction of a lot of science fiction fans to the word "sci-fi", and for very similar reasons. Which is why I no longer describe my stuff as the mutant offspring of political sf and gay porn. :-)

The thread is the one about sfnal sex, and there were some rather unfortunate references made to paranormal erotic romance which I could have taken offence at were I of a mind to be as touchy as some people have been recently about any perceived slight to their political sensibilities. Even if my only fangfucker to date is a 5000 word gay vampire version of one of the major themes from Methuselah's Children.

Ah, I didn't look closely at that. Surely the only important question about sex is whether we should use a free market system, perhaps involving kiosks, or rely on a centralized bureaucracy to select our mates, such as was used on Krypton?
