1) You know you've been in fandom too long when you're sitting in the hotel dining room eating the breakfast paid for by $EMPLOYER, you start assessing how many people the room could hold for breakfast and how good the staff are at re-laying the table, and you realise that you have been subconsciously assessing the hotel as a potential sf con venue ever since you arrived the night before. And you've never even been a concom member.

I thought it couldn't handle Redemption but might well be suitable for a smaller con if we could convince them to give us the corporate rates my room cost $EMPLOYER, with a good deal on the function rooms. This was pretty much confirmed during a conversation this week with a friend on concom.

2) Met up with a couple of fannish friends on Wednesday. We went to one of the Chinese buffets for dinner, fully expecting to be told we'd have to pay the evening rate since it was in the buffer hour between lunch and dinner rates, but only had to pay the lunch rate, which was nice. Presumably this was because they didn't put the full evening selection out until some time later, but there were more than enough dishes to choose from, including what looked to me like a decent vegetarian selection. The food was excellent and we all ate too much. I've blanked on the name and am offline as I type, so can't look it up, but I will probably end up there for another meal next week.

One of our number had an early train to catch, but Steve then took me to the Canal House, on the basis that it was entertaining in its own right, being a pub with a canal running through it -- or at least into it. The building used to be the canal museum, and is built over a small cul-de-sac off the main canal, which houses a couple of narrowboats. It was indeed full of geek appeal, between the canal and the large selection of Real Beer. The latter is of no personal interest since I'm teetotal, but I do take note of these things for the benefit of friends.

The train's currently going through a valley onthe Sheffield-Stockport line. It's very pretty and I should look at it.

3) Met up with another fannish friend for lunch today (Friday). Being located right in the city centre has its uses, as it was a quick walk to a nice eaterie.

I could doubtless have done more socialising in the first week, but I didn't know until I got there exactly where I was in relation to everything, and then didn't have net access for a few days, which made contact somewhat difficult. Am contemplating buying a PAYG mobile broadband dongle if I do much travelling in future. as I suspect that nowadays they're they simplest way of getting online when away from home for more than a night or two.

Edale. Which I have been through four times myself in the last four days, though unfortunately only the eastward trips were in daylight.

My brother is urging me to get a dongle.

I got a Vodafone mobile broadband dongle last year after being rather peeved when the promised internet access at a weekend conference didn't work. I tutor online and so it doesn't actually matter where I am as long as I can check in on my students each day. The dongle is perfect for that and as long as I can get a mobile signal, I can connect using the Eee.

It doesn't seem to cost all that much either and is certainly cheaper than paying what seems to be the going rate for Wi-fi access. Obviously if there's free wi-fi, I use that, but the dongle means I don't have to rely on finding it.
