In case there's anyone reading this who would be interested and hasn't already heard -- Brandon Sanderson has a long, detailed blog post about how he ended up writing an 800 kword novel after taking on the task of finishing Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, and why it has been turned into three volumes for publication over the next two years. Even for those who haven't followed the series (including me), this is a great look at how the decision-making happens on both the writing side of things and the editorial/production side. Sometimes three books where one was expected is just the way the story has to be -- it's not always about milking the market for more sales, especially when you have *that* many loose ends to tie up.
