End of an era: Comet Miniatures
Nov. 30th, 2013 04:57 pmIt's a long time since I've done any model-making, but some tidying up earlier today led me to look up Comet Miniatures. Only to find that they've gone, the shop closed in the last few weeks, and the old website 404. The mail order business has moved to http://www.timeless-hobbies.com/ and they're apparently continuing to trade at shows, but I doubt I'll see their stock again.
I only ever went to the shop a handful of times, on the rare occasions I had enough time after business meetings in London to get over to Lavender Hill during opening hours. But it was a wonderful experience, rack upon rack of models and accessories, full of geeky joy. Amongst other things, it allowed me to complete my run of New/Space Voyager, a short-lived but much loved magazine from MAP for space and sf modellers. And I still have my boxed up Blake's 7 Liberator kit sitting in the back of the cupboard, it having been to California and back, and still unmade. Like a good many other modellers, I opened the box, saw all the teeny tiny parts, and panicked...
