Made a tiny amount of headway on the To Be Watched mountain this week.
Watched the first episode of Monkey
. Dear Lord, it's even cheesier than I remembered. The sets and special effects are exactly what you'd expect of late 70s sf/fantasy, and I'm sure Modern Youth would be most disappointed. There is scenery-chewing. And it is enormous fun. It is every bit as brash and irreverent as the title character, and I am looking forward to watching the rest of the series.
I bought Other Half Jeff Wayne's The War of The Worlds 30th Anniversary Edition
for Christmas. This is the limited edition boxset with the twin DVD of the 2006 stage show, and a copy of the HG Wells book. Other Half watched it while I was at Redemption, so I watched the first two sides while I was doing the ironing yesterday. Yes, the first two sides, because I am an Old Fart and I own the original double album on vinyl. I may not have actually seen that copy for nearly ten years because it's in storage along with anything we could play it on, but it got played often enough that I know *exactly* where the side breaks are.
Nothing will ever be quite the same as the original cast. But this is a damn good try at it, and the film segments are wonderful. The Richard Burton head doesn't work for me, as it's unliving proof of the Uncanny Valley effect, but it was certainly the right decision to keep Burton's narration. Slight shock at how very much older Justin Hayward looks since the last time I saw him in anything. I'm looking forward to watching the rest of it, and the assorted extras on the DVDs.
